Mise-en-scene for our music video

We have to analyse the different type of costume and props etc. we're using in our music video and talk about why we use them and why they're relative to the song and the ideas we're using and we do the analyses by using CLAMPS.(Costume, Lighting, Actors, Make-up, Props and Setting)

Costume- For our actor, he is just wearing normal, everyday clothing to show that he isn't any different from all the other people walking around him and that he is just a normal person. Then for the singer and band members they are wearing dark clothing because they're meant to be subconscious, like guardians, so they should be in plain, unexpressive clothing.

These clothing was used because it worked for the genre and it was also convenient that the actors had them.

Lighting-For most of the scenes, we're using natural daylight because we're outside most of the time and we tried to film the video when it was dark and rainy outside so it could reflect the mood of how our actor's feeling. We then used natural night time light for the burning piano scene so we could get some good shots of it in the dark. Then for the performance based scene we're using a spotlight on the singer and the drummer to show that thet're the main point of attention in the scene.

Actors- We have the actor looking depressed all the way through the film because it reflects the mood of the song and the story of the song because he had just been dumped and the singer and drummer show no expression at all because they're not really there, meaning they're not real.

Make-up- No make-up was used in the making of our music video because we wanted all the actors to look real and we wouldn't expect a depressed man to wear make-up and we wanted the conscious to look normal.

Props- The props we used were the phone to show that he had been dumped, the I-pod to start the music, the burning piano for our final scene and the piano and drum set in the canteen for the performance based section of our video.

We used a mobile phone because teenagers of this age use them  nearly all the time. This also showed the audience that it is for the present and make the video make sense.

The Ipod once again was used so the whole video made sense and established that the actor could also hear the music but no one else could.

The piano was used because the song itself consists of a piano. We also burnt one so to correspond to the "up in flames".

The drum kit was used also because it is in the song itself and added to the piano so it wasn't going to look plain.

Setting:
The settings we shot our scenes in were the actors bedroom when we find out he gets dumped, the train station where he goes to Lincoln, Lincoln high street where he walks around, the school canteen for the performance scene and a sheep field for the final and burning piano scene.

  1. Think about the connotations of each of these - really deconstruct the video and all of your ideas.

Are generic conventions met or challenged?

Use pics of your own - they're better than stock images off the net.

Why no make up? Why no woman? Why minimal props? Ask yourself (and answer) these sorts of questions. For actors - think about gestures, expressions, body language... will they make direct address towards the audience? There's LOADS to write about (it's basically everything you've considered and decided on as a group), but not enough here at the moment.

    Currently low level 3 (c)
